'The Artist,' 'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy,' 'Hugo' Lead BAFTA Nominees

LONDON Michel Hazanavicius's "The Artist" leads the field with nominations in 12 categories for this year's Orange British Academy Film Awards, presented by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.The black-and-white silent film, a big winner at the Golden Globes, sees Hazanavicius nominated for best director and Jean Dujardin nominated for leading actor. His co-star Brnice Bejo is nominated for a leading actress nod. "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" is nominated in 11 categories, "Hugo" has nine nominations, "My Week with Marilyn" picked up six nominations and "The Help" and "War Horse" are each nominated five times.This year's best film nod will go to one from "The Artist," "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy," "The Descendants," "Drive" and "The Help."While Martin Scorsese's "Hugo" misses out on a tilt at best film the director secures a nomination for best director. Scorsese goes up against Nicolas Winding Refn for Drive, Lynne Ramsay for "We Need To Talk About Kevin," Tomas Alfredson for "Tinker Tailor" and Hazanavicius.Scorsese is also nominated in the documentary category for "George Harrison: Living in the Material World" and, as previously announced, will receive the BAFTA Fellowship.George Clooney is nominated for leading actor in "The Descendants" which is also nominated for adapted screenplay, as well as best film.Brad Pitt for "Moneyball," Gary Oldman in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spyand Michael Fassbender for his performance in "Shame," round out the nominees for the best actor award.Challenging Bejo in the best actress category is Michelle Williams for her turn in "My Week With Marilyn," Viola Davis for "The Help," Meryl Streep for "The Iron Lady" and Tilda Swinton for "We Need To Talk About Kevin."The evening's supporting actor award will go to one from Kenneth Branagh for "My Week With Marilyn," Jim Broadbent in "The Iron Lady," Philip Seymour Hoffman for "The Ides of March," Christopher Plummer for "Beginners" and Jonah Hill for "Moneyball."Best supporting actress will be contested by Carey Mulligan for "Drive," Judi Dench in "My Week With Marilyn," Jessica Chastain and Octavia Spencer for their turns in "The Help" and Melissa McCarthy for "Bridesmaids."The Orange British Academy Film Awards take place on Sunday February 12 at the Royal Opera House in London.This is the fifteenth year of Orange's sponsorship of the Film Awards.The ceremony will be hosted by Stephen Fry and will be broadcast exclusively on BBC One.Red carpet coverage will be hosted by Edith Bowman on BBC Three.Daniel Radcliffe and Holliday Grainger rose bright and early to present the nominations for the BAFTA Film Awards Nominations on Tuesday, Feb. 17, broadcasting live via webcast at 7:40 a.m. in London.
